Crowd funding and the art of the promotional video

When it comes to funding a new project or business venture, ask yourself what’s easier; finding one person to donate $10,000 to your project, or finding 1,000 people to donate $10? Now that sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo are becoming more popular with independent filmmakers, artists, and business owners of all levels, crowd funding videos are being used not just as a way of getting your foot in the door; but a way to kick down a whole new one.

This week’s inspirational video pick is a more personal one; Paul Mathieu, a close friend of Steve’s, (owner of Video Experts) is promoting his new documentary “Man on Top” about snake oil salesmen and multi-level marketing schemes through a very creative and entertaining kickstarter campaign.

Here’s why it works:

  • filming a promotional video in the style of the classic multi-level marketing pitch has you instantly hooked
  • it’s funny and clever, and ties in perfectly with the theme of the documentary.
  • In addition to the promotional video for the campaign itself, Mathieu’s team also includes a trailer for the documentary, which allows the potential investor to get a sneak peek at the filmmaker’s skill level and shooting style.
